Abraham Lincoln : A Great Leader

Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of United States from 1861 to 1865. He is regarded as one of the most effective and powerful heroes America has ever witnessed. His role would remain pivotal for American as well as world history for the rest of all years to come. His immense contribution towards the abolition of slavery, strengthening of the federal system of America, promoting voting rights for Blacks and display of effective leadership during Civil war makes him a character that needs no exaggerations.

Lifestory of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born on 12 February, 1809 in Kentucky U.S to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. During the 1800s, it was not easy to lead a rural life and he had to engage himself in daily farm chores and face poverty. He grew up to be an intelligent and witty man. He backed a job as a clerk in New Salem, where he was admired for being able to read and write. Later Abraham listed his name as a candidate for a seat in the State legislature of Illinois. Losing despite winning 277 of 300 votes, Lincoln focused on studying law and arguing cases before the court. 1834 turned out to be lucky for him, when he won after running the election again. In 1846, he won the Whig nomination to the U.S House of Representatives.

Slavery and Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was a strong oppose of slavery that was legal in the Southern U.S. In his famous Peoria Speech, he said that he hated slavery as it ruins their reputation of being republican in the eyes of the world. In 1860, his appealing speech at the Cooper Union against slavery showcased his intellectual leadership skills.

Abraham Lincoln : 16th President of USA

In 1860, Lincoln ran for the Presidential election as a member of the Republican Party. He won and became the 16th President of the United States. Beating Stephen Douglas. The Southern States were against his policies of abolition of slavery fearing violation of their constitutional rights. No ballot was cast for him in 10 Southern states and they decided to leave the Union before Lincoln taking over his office. South Carolina followed by Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas left and established their own country under the name Confederate States of America.

During the Civil War that broke on April 12, 1861, and was 4 years bloody trail, Lincoln walked North through victory and issued Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves of Confederate States. Lincoln was a great speaker, though soft spoken his words carried weightage. Lincoln’s Gettysburg address is one of the most important speeches in American history where he talks about the nation experiencing a new birth of freedom and that Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the Earth.

Demise of Abraham Lincoln

On 14th April, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre. Booth had plans to abduct Abraham and blackmail him to release the Confederate prisoners. After 12 days of assassination, Booth was tracked down and shot. While it was a devastating news for all, some Lincoln haters cheered after hearing the news of his assassination.
