When is Dussehra celebrated?
Dussehra, also recognized as Vijayadashmi, is a very important Indian celebration which is observed on the tenth day of Ashvin month as per the Hindu calendar. This day falls in the month of September or October. The day concludes a nine day fasting period of Navratri in the Hindu Customs. The day also coincides with the immersion of the icon of Goddess Durga.

Why is it celebrated?
The day is celebrated to remember the killing of the evil Ravana by Lord Rama. The day is also celebrated for the killing of the demon Mahishasur by Goddess Durga. Dussehra celebration spread out the message of triumph of good over sin.
When it commenced? (Myth Behind Dussehra)
It is supposed that the celebration of Dussehra initiated in the 17th century, when the king of Mysore ordered the celebration of the day on a luxurious scale. Ever since, the day is celebrated with immense fervor and liveliness. There are a bunch of mythological tales related with the day.
Myth behind Dussehra
Ravana was killed by Lord Rama on this day as a vengeance against the brutal act of kidnapping Goddess Sita (Lord Rama’s wife) by the former.
Mythology also has it that Goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasura after an extended spell of cruelty and domination by Mahishasura.
Yet another story connected with the origins of this day is the showering of gold coins. After Kautsa asked King Raghu for 140 million coins to be give as a present to his Guru in return for his knowledge and teachings, Raghuraja went to Indra for help who then asked Lord Kuber to shower coins on the city of Ayodhya. After giving 140 million coins to his Guru, Kautsa circulated the remaining coins to the people who lived in Ayodhya.

Largely, the day is distinguished to honor the dominance of good over evil. The day is celebrated on a very large scale in India as well as in Bangladesh. The most well-known Dussehra merriments in India are those in the city of Mysore. Other renowned Dussehra celebrations in India comprise that of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, Kolkata and Orissa, where the festival is led by a week long celebration. In a large amount of other parts in India, plays are planned all across the cities depicting the tale of Ramayana which culminates in the killing of Ravana on this day.
How Dussehra Celebrated?
Statues of Ravana are destroyed by fire all over in India on Dussehra and in Delhi; the occasion is attended by political figures in the Ramlila Maidan. Goddess Chamundeshwari is worshipped on this day and a majestic procession of her idol is taken out all through the city. Major buildings are adorned and ornamented with lights and color all across the city. People go to the Pooja Pandals,wear fresh clothes and arrange traditional food at home and commemorate the festival with their family and some of their close friends.
