The book One Indian Girl by Chetan Bhagat digs into the vast lying patriarchy in the Indian society. The limitations that are not uttered about however exist all around us. Radhika deals with an unconfident boyfriend who cannot see her earning (thrice) more than him and later on a wedded boss who becomes her lover, but rarely recognizes that she would desire to have a family as well. Neither of the men she meets comprehends that she could wish to have both worlds- a home and a career as well.
Review – One Indian Girl by Chetan Bhagat
The narration and content is outspoken and uncomplicated, overflowing with relevant incidents and links. The author brings in the amusement element with the dramatic Punjabi family, overloaded with aunts and cousins galore, in addition a wedding ceremony to peak up the stage show factor. I liked Radhika’s portrayal, and her developing from a basic West Delhi girl to an elegant and smart corporate woman. The presentation in female first person is remarkable, with the complete story conveyed as Radhika’s feelings and outlook.
I liked Chetan’s observation and stand on feminism. In a world where the whole thing is just about hype, and the accurate gist of feminism is vanished, he talks out the choices that women are enforced to make. But he failed at some points , Radhika has been a feminist throughout the novel and has made her priorities clear, then why does she has to plead her boyfriend not to leave her and assure him that she would leave her job because of him. Chetan has contradicted a lot of points related to feminism: like why does Radhika needs to wax her legs just to gain a guys attention.
The book falls short on many fronts. Extremely predictable, it isn’t very extraordinary from his previous ones. There is a scale of monotony in the attitude and yes, you could pass over a couple of pages very easily. It also required that “spark” and wit that would have made the book else a better read.
The first half was interesting and this is the sole reason I read the entire book. There was a time that it bored me and I thought of not reading it anymore as I knew what is going to happen. In the end he did tried to manage a twist but that was a lot like the typical bollywood movies and by that I mean ‘Unbelievable’. The co incidences seemed planned.
The novel can be best illustrated as a slight anomaly from the average. By the end, it’s like a commercial theme song you don’t even care about, but one that you can’t stop buzzing. But Bhagat’s position as a bestselling author may force his massive readership base to spark a dialogue on feminism and equal rights, though it falls short of making an actual impact.
