Initially email systems required the author and the recipient , both to be online at the same time in common with instant messaging. But today’s email systems are based on a ‘store and forward’ model. E-mail servers accept, forward, deliver, and store messages, neither the user nor their computers or other systems are required to be online simultaneously, they can simply connect to the internet or mail servers for as long as it takes to send or receive the message.

An internet e-mail has three components : the message envelope, the message header, and the message body. The message header contains control information, including originator’s e-mail address and one or more recipients’ addresses. Subject header field can also b added. The body contains the main message and also different file types can be attached and sent in an email.

To facilitate electronic mail exchange between remote sites and with other organizations, telecommunication links, such as dial up modems or leased lines, provided means to transport email globally, creating local and global networks.

There is a typical sequence of events that takes place when sender transmits a message using Mail User Agent (MUA) addressed to the e-mail address of the recipient.

The MUA formats the message in the email format and uses the submission  protocol, to send the message to the local Mail Submission Agent (MSA). MSA determines the destination address and resolves a domain name of the mail server in the Domain Name System (DNS). The DNS server responds with any MX records listing the mail exchange servers for that domain.A Message Transfer Agent (MTA) server run by the recipient’s ISP. Then the message  reaches the final Message Delivery Agent (MDA) which again delivers it to the mailbox of the user. And finally, recipient’s MUA picks up the message using either Post Office Protocol (POP3) or the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).
