Janmashtami which is also known as Krishna Janmashtami, Krishna Ashtami or Gokul Ashtami, is an exceptionally admired Hindu festival. Hindus observe this celebration to rejoice the birthday of their beloved God Sri Krishna. He is even considered as an avatar of the idol Vishnu. Lord Krishna was born in Mathura. Gokul and Vrindavan was his play ground and was a very mischievous child.  This festival is very well-liked among kids.

When is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated?

Sri Krishna was born at midnight and that time of the year falls in the month of August or September. Krishna Janmastami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar in 2011, the day was observed on 22 August in North India.

Importance of Janmashtami

Janmashtami is an important event for the Hindus. The birth of Lord Krishna marks the conclusion of brutality and meanness over mankind. Krishna is a representation of uprightness. Kansa, the uncle of Krishna, was a mean and unholy ruler. Krishna saved the people from the domination of Kansa.

Incarnation of God

Lord Vishnu took the appearance of a human being and incarnated on this earth as Sri Krishna. He took the human structure to relieve humanity form troubles The Hindu epics are full of brave acts of Sri Krishna.

Ritual and Celebration of Janmashtami

Disciples observe fast till eight days, and break them on the ninth day which is the time of birth of Lord Krishna. Temples of Sri Krishna are skillfully decorated. Thousands of Hindu men and women get dressed in latest clothes and get together in the temples to celebrate the birthday of their dearly loved God. The priest recite mantras and adore Lord Sri Krishna.

Ritual of Dahi Handi

A tradition of Dahi Handi is extensively followed in several parts of India. Dahi Handi is an earthen container filled with yogurt. On this day, people form groups knot the ‘Dahi Handi’ at an elevation. Handis are set up all around the city, and groups of youngsters, called Govinda Pathaks, tour around in trucks trying to smash as many handis as possible during the day. They stand one over another forming a pyramid like arrangement to get to the ‘Dahi Handi’. It is lastly celebrated by breaking the ‘Dahi Handi’.

Janmashtami, traditionally known as ‘Dahi Handi’ in Mumbai and Pune is renowned with enormous enthusiasm and passion. In Gujarat where the city Dwarka has Dwarkadhish temple celebrates it with a lot of pomp and delight.

Rasa leela, is a unique aspect in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur. Rasa lila is a theatre program of Krishna’s young times. To reach high-hanging container of butter and break it is still a tradition. It is a main event in Tamil Nadu on Gokul ashtami.

In the eastern state of Orissa, in the region of Puri and West Bengal in Nabadwip, people celebrate it with fasting all day long and doing puja at midnight. Purana Pravachana from Bhagavata Purana is done from the tenth Skandha which is about the pastimes of Lord Krishna. The subsequent day is called Nanda Utsav or the festive celebrations of Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda Maharani. On that day people break their fast and present various cooked sweets through the early hour.

Krishnashtami brings much of delight and a feeling of harmony. It considered being as an adoration towards Lord Krishna.  Sri Krishna laid down guidance and sermons in Gita. Every word articulated in this book always gives encouragement to fight against the wrong.
