World Tourism Day 2022: Tourism is an important sector worldwide with almost 1.2 billion people travelling abroad each year, which symbolizes peace and prosperity among nations.
A specialized agency of the United Nations, named the United Nations World Tourism Organization, is known for promoting sustainable and universally accessible tourism across the world. World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27th September, since 1980 when it was established by the UNWTO in its third session. The agenda of recognizing this day is to spread awareness internationally about tourism and its values like social and economic.
World Tourism Day 2022 Theme
The official theme of World Tourism Day this year is ‘Accessible Tourism’ and will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The reason for choosing this tourist hub for the celebrations is that Thailand is known as the ‘Land of smiles’, in 2015, the country became the most visited tourist destination in Southeast Asia, accounting for almost 30 million international tourists.

The official message by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is ‘Tourism for all – promoting universal accessibility. Availing of leisure and tourism services is a right of everybody but it has been observed that people with disabilities face problems in accessing the same, in terms of relevant information, transportation and most importantly an environment, where they can feel free to do so. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of the world’s population is estimated to live with some form of disability. UNWTO is convinced that accessibility for all to tourist facilities, products, and services should be a central part of any responsible and sustainable tourist policy. With the theme being this, the program is sure to create awareness about accessing the beauty, the earth has to offer. Mr. Secretary General of the UN also hopes that people all over the world have an enriching and compelling experience of tourism.

UNWTO Recommendation on providing Accessible information in tourism: The tourism sector stakeholders should effectively communicate accurate and relevant information to all the tourists prior, during, and after the journey, especially tourists with disabilities and special needs. The European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT) and the Spanish ONCE Foundation for the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities has produced a compilation of Good Practices in the Accessible Tourism Supply Chain to promote the theme of Tourism for all.
Purpose of Celebrating World Tourism Day
Other prior themes of the World Tourism Day have been “Tourism – Celebrating Diversity”, “Tourism: a tool for peace and dialogue among civilizations”, “Tourism responding to the Challenge of Climate Change and global warming”, “Quality staff, quality tourism”, “Technology and nature: two challenges for tourism at the dawn of the twenty-first century”.
Tourism Day is also a prime moment for a country like India, which is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, and land of sculptures. On this day of tourism, decisions on the development of the Konkan region are to be taken regarding tourism in comparatively unexplored coastal Konkan districts such as Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
The main purpose of celebrating these days internationally is to establish prosperous tourism among nations, which would not only lead to exploration of the beauty of the planet but also bring harmony among humans.
