World Tourism Day 2022: Tourism is an important sector worldwide with almost 1.2 billion people travelling abroad each year, which symbolizes peace and prosperity among nations.
A specialized agency of the United Nations, named the United Nations World Tourism Organization, is known for promoting sustainable and universally accessible tourism across the world. World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27th September, since 1980 when it was established by the UNWTO in its third session. The agenda of recognizing this day is to spread awareness internationally about tourism and its values like social and economic.

The official theme of World Tourism Day this year is ‘Accessible Tourism’ and will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The reason for choosing this tourist hub for the celebrations is that Thailand is known as the ‘Land of smiles’, in 2015, the country became the most visited tourist destination in Southeast Asia, accounting for almost 30 million international tourists.

The official message by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is ‘Tourism for all – promoting universal accessibility. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of the world’s population is estimated to live with some form of disability. UNWTO Recommendation on providing Accessible information in tourism: The tourism sector stakeholders should effectively communicate accurate and relevant information to all the tourists prior, during, and after the journey, especially tourists with disabilities and special needs. The European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT) and the Spanish ONCE Foundation for the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities has produced a compilation of Good Practices in the Accessible Tourism Supply Chain to promote the theme of Tourism for all.
