Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher and statesman of India. It is on his birthday that the Teacher’s day is celebrated in India. He was born in a Telugu family. His father’s name was Sarvepalli Veeraswami who was a subordinate revenue official in the service of a local landlord. His mother’s name was Sitamma. He had his primary education in Thiruttani and later in Tirupati. He graduated from Madras Christian College in 1906. He chose philosophy as his subject by chance and not by choice. It is said that he took the books from an ex-student who took philosophy as his subject. He wrote his Masters thesis on ” The ethics of Vedanta and Metaphysical Presuppositions” .It was intended as a reply to the charge against vedanta which stated that it has no room for ethics. His philosophy grounded on Advaita Vedanta and he has a big role in interpreting this tradition for a contemporary understanding. His works are influential in shaping and understanding of Hinduism in India and also in the west. He had a very successful academic career. In April 1909, he was appointed at the Department Of Philosophy at Madras Presidency College. He also was a Professor of Eastern religion and ethics at University of Oxford from 1936-1952.

He won Knighthood in 1931,  Bharat Ratna in 1954 and Membership of British Royale  order of merit in 1963. Since 1962, his birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day.

He started his political career much later in life. He represented India at UNESCO in 1947. Also, he was ambassador of India to soviet Union (1949-1952). He was an elected member of constituent Assembly of India. He was the first Vice president of India and Second President of India from 1962-1967.

He contributed to India as one of the earliest and significant scholar. He was not involved in the Freedom Struggle.
