Essay on the Green Revolution

The Green revolution is a series of events right from starting of using of high yielding variety of seeds, pesticides, improved agricultural equipment’s, etc. which together led to the betterment of the people and market related to agriculture. It is called a revolution because it was a very widespread phenomenon after its success at its place of origin.

Green revolution was started in order to match the production of food crops with the increasing growth of population. Also, there were frequent famines due to crop failures. The instances of crop failures were mainly due to natural factors such as scanty rainfall, destroying of crops by winds, etc. Also, pest control was not much important unless it caused too much damage. All these together drove the scientists to develop some technologies by which food shortage would be minimized or completely eliminated.

During the time period, global agricultural productivity increased drastically as a result of all new advances. New chemical fertilizers and synthetic herbicides and pesticides were created. The chemical fertilizers made it possible to supply the crops with extra nutrients and therefore they produced better yeilds. Moreover, better seeds were developed which were more resistant to pests. Herbicides killed insects and prevented plant diseases. Also, multiple cropping was developed during the green revolution. These new technical advancements led to increased productivity and this was enough to meet the needs to the people well. Norman Borlaug developed a strain of wheat which could resist diseases and were a little shorter in length. The short length prevented it from getting damaged easily by winds. He introduced this to other countries as well and using this technique, food shortages were eradicated as well as the farmers were largely profited by selling the crops. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize also.

As a part of the green revolution use of high yielding variety of seeds, improved irrigation, consolidation of land holdings, land reforms, improved rural infrastructure, etc. were carried out. All these steps as a whole improved the livelihood of people up to a great extent. The well beings of farmer included secured income and bigger profits. So it is very important for the agriculture based countries such as India. With a country largely dependent on agriculture, the green revolution definitely Improved the economy of our country.

However since the green revolution involved usage of many synthetic chemicals to enhance production, it also meant a great deal of degradation of land quality. Increased exploitation of land also resulted in erosion. However this was taken into account soon and accordingly the farmers were directed.
