Greater Himalayas, the adobe of snow extends 2300 kms with an average extension of 6100 meters spreading across five countries, Bhutan, India, China, Nepal and Pakistan. Himalayas is significant in religious, geographical and historical aspects. Early Aryans considered Himalayas as the dwelling of Gods and Goddess which gives religious significance to the great Himalayan range. The Himalayan ranges were originated from the collision of Indian plate against that of Eurasian. The shallow Tethys Sea deposits were raised and thus the great Himalayas formed. This has happened about 70 million years ago. According to geologists, these plates are in motion even now. Due to this movement of the tectonic plates, earth quakes are often in this arena. Sediments found here were light weighted which unlike in other areas formed a mountain range.
Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges are in the north of the Himalayas along with Tibetan Plateau, and the Indo- Gangetic Plain in the south. The Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra are the major rivers that rise in the Himalayas. The ranges, which form the northern border of the Indian subcontinent and an almost impassable barrier between it and the lands to the north, are part of a vast mountain belt that stretches halfway around the world from North Africa to the Pacific Ocean coast of Southeast Asia.
Religious significance of Himalayas is very holistic to Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism followers. ParoTaktsang of Himalayas where Padmasambhava is said to have founded Buddhism in Bhutan. He is also referred to as the patron of Sikhism. Dalai Lama ,The spiritual head of Buddhism lives in Himalayas along with a large number of followers counting upto 6000 monasteries.The very famous Vajrayana , the Buddhist spot is situated in the valley of Himalayas. Various religious centers locate along Tibet, Bhutan, Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Darjeeling. Apart from these the Hinduism believes the Kailas Mountains of Himalaya as the home of The Lord Siva.
